Turning a fragmented market of 13 African countries into a single market was the main aim of SABMiller’s One Africa Transformation Project. The company is the world’s second largest brewer, with over 70,000 employees in more than 80 countries, and a procurement function that manages around $8bn third party spend.
By bringing together all African countries under one team, procurement hoped to be able to leverage spending and achieve savings. Representatives from functions such as regional HR, communications, IT development, finance, as well as country representatives joined a committee that has so far brought Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia into the new operating model.
The change has already seen multi-million dollar bottom-line savings introduced as well as improving stock visibility and service levels as well as bringing about much greater crossfunctional understanding and collaboration.
Judges comments: “It’s always an excellent idea to have a second look at existing design and structure to respond to environmental changes and competition.”
